Turakina is one of the oldest established settlements in the Wanganui district the first white settler Adam Glasgow having arrived here in the late 1840′s. Scottish Pioneers bought many of their traditions with them including the Caledonian games which were first held in Turakina in 1860 and continue today as an annual event. Turakina was a very busy and prosperous township in the coaching days but with the opening of the railway junction at Marton and a better road system trade dwindled and business moved to more lucrative markets.
There are two cottages beside the old coach house the single story one was built before 1870 the two storey building around 1890 and then of course the coach house built in 1857.
